In post-World World I Australia, Tom and Isabel, a lighthouse keeper and his wife, struggle with infertility and loss on an isolated island. When a boat washes ashore carrying a dead man and an infant girl, Tom – desperate to please his grieving wife – accepts to raise the baby as the couple’s own, despite his nagging conscience. He cannot foresee the ripples his decision has produced.
