Set in the tenements of Lower Manhattan in 1871, 12-year-old ‘Moth’ is sold into servitude (by her mother, no less) for a wealthy woman. Treated cruelly by her mistress, Moth escapes to The Bowery – an area filled with thieves, beggars, freaks, and prostitutes, where she eventually meets Miss Everett, the owner of a brothel known as The Infant School. Miss Everett caters to gentlemen who are willing to pay top dollar for companions who are “willing and clean.” Most desirable are young virgins like Moth.
