In the early 1970s, 12-year old Joan has recently moved from California to Connecticut. There, she meets Sarah (“Fox”) who lives with her motorcycle-riding Dad. As Joan morphs into ‘Newt,’ a new identity, the two girls forge a close friendship. When they both get into a writing workshop at Berkeley, taught by the unusual Verla Volante, together, they learn how stories can help them notice the unexamined life.

Perfect for:

  • Girls (or adults!) who have felt that they don’t fit in.
  • Anyone seeking a well-written, coming-of-age story.
  • Gift-givers: a great choice for teens who are aspiring writers
